一、The Development of the Department

PET Center of Huashan Hospital, Fudan University was initially planned by the department of nuclear medicine of Huashan Hospital. Approved first by Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau and then Ministry of Health of the People?s Republic of China, the Center located at 518 Wuzhong Road, Shanghai(Gamma Hospital).

The first 18F-FDG whole-body PET scan was performed on December 15th 1998. The
installation and debugging of the accelerator was finished in October 1999. The first PET scanner was EXACT HR+ of Siemens Medical System and the medical cyclotron was RDS 111 of CTI. After over 1 year of trial operation, PET Center of Huashan Hospital was formally established on November 26th 1999. It was one of the first centers approved by the Ministry of Health to be established in China.

Mr. Xu Zhensheng was appointed as director of the PET Center and Dr. Guan Yihui and Dr. Zhao Jun as vice chiefs of the center as well as vice chiefs of the department of nuclear medicine. Till August 2006, there were 13 employees and 11 of which were official.

PET Center was under general coordination of the department of nuclear medicine.

二、Medical Work

During 8 years operation of PET Center, it aims at “First grade equipment, first grade setting, first grade experts, first grade service” and has established high standard, high quality medical manage system. It has not only achieved great social and economic benefit, but also has gained successful experience of medical management and ways of financing channel. Under the support of Huashan Hospital, PET Center explored the market outside, managed as an enterprise inside. With better quality of clinical diagnosis, innovation of science study and proposition of the ideal “To be 100% responsible for the patients, Make the patients 100% satisfied”, PET Center of Huashan Hospital has become global well-known and national best with its outstanding benefits both socially and economically. Number of cases examined has exceeded over 16,500 with total income about 140 million RMB.

In year 2003, leaders of Huashan Hospital decided to introduce PET/CT in form of
financing lease-holding. Approved by Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau and Ministry of Health, on October 27th 2003, the Biograph Sensation 16 PET/CT scanner of Siemens Medical System was put into operation. Until the end of June 2006, the scanner had accomplished over 10,000 scans of PET/CT in 32 months and created the world record of 549 cases in one month (data provided by Siemens Medical System). Because of the successful operation of the PET/CT, loan to be compensated in 3 years was paid in 18 months, saving the interest of about 700000 RMB.

三、Scientific Research

Since the foundation of PET Center, 82 scientific articles have been published including 5 articles that accepted by SCI. <Selective Clinical Cases of PET> and <Essential Management of Nuclear Medicine> were compiled. Doctors of the center have applied 6 scientific projects, participated several National Science Fundation projects and various international academic exchanges. “Applicable Study of PET and PET/CT in tumor diagnosis and clinical management” received third prize of clinical achievement in Shanghai in December 2005. The sterile room was upgraded in 2005 and received the first certification for radiopharmaceutical usage in the industry in Shanghai.

四、Education

There are 1 mentor of M.D. and 2 mentors of Master in the center; 8 doctoral
postgraduates and 9 master postgraduates have graduated since 2006.
During October 12th~14th 2001, PET Center together with <Chinese Magazine of Nuclear Medicine> held the International Conference of Case Study, 96 members from USA, Hongkong, Taiwan province and China mainland attended. On April 6th 2004, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University-Siemens Education Center of Molecular Imaging was founded in PET Center of Huashan Hospital. During year 2002~2004, the center held three courses of national continual education programs: ”Quality control and physician training of PET”, 126 students were admitted. During year 2005~2006, the center held two courses of national continual education programs: “Physician training of new technology in PET/CT”, 76 students were admitted. The center also accepted 87 visiting physicians since 2001.
